I have been drawing and painting all summer, and have joined two new Art sites...Shadowness... ..http://shadowness.com/HouseofChabrier and a site called Thalisee. I'm always known as HouseofChabrier where ever I go so that makes life easy.

I have been working on Needlepoint Canvases, Wizard drawings, and bird paintings. I recently found out about a bird called a Ruff. A very elegant bird, and I have been painting and drawing them, plus vultures and hummingbirds. I guess you could say I like variety in my life.

Here are some of my latest paintings, and I will start being a good blogger again, and post more often!

Older Painting

These are four Oil Paintings I did of the California Pepper tree on our neighbors property but at the bottom of our property. This is what it looks like during the hot dry California summers. The second painting below is what it looks like in spring during the spring rains. The orange is the California poppies and other spring flowers that come back year after year.

This 32" x 32" Pepper Tree Oil painting on canvas is what the bottom of the property looks like when a cold mist enshrouds the pepper tree, and you can barely see details as you look over the land.

This painting below is what the California Pepper Tree looks like when the late raking sun lights up the pepper tree, and the pink bougainvillea just beyond, and it looks like the tree is aflame. These are paintings I did a couple of years ago, but there are still areas on our property I want to draw and paint.

I have painted the above image twice, and would do it again because the old pepper tree (even though the neighbors trimmed it back severely) always has a different look at different times of day.

Next I will put up a few more paintings that were done a while ago, but still hold their appeal.

The above are oil portraits of People I know, and painted from my own photographs. The Images below are done in Adobe Illustrator and were done for the fun of it. I like to try out new mediums...I love the computer, and drawing with a wacom tablet is great deal of fun.

Paintings from the Present and the Past

I paint or draw everyday, and sometimes surprise even myself when I rediscover something I did quite a while back. I thought I would put up some of my recent drawings and paintings, and then put up some that are favorites of mine.

I painted these wonderful roosters from some great photos taken by a young girl on Deviant Art who raises and loves her chickens...You can see her work on DA by going to this link: http://jordanmireldis.deviantart.com/

These were of course done with her permission, and I have a couple of hens she took pictures of. I had a great deal of fun painting them because they look so protective of their little chicks. Thank you Jordon for letting me paint from your photos! The hens:

This is one of my favorites working from Jordon's photo. This Hen looked just this mad in the photo. I captioned the photo "Don't even think about it!"

Well I found one of the hens, but not the other so you will have to look at another colorful Rooster. This one is called King of the Garden.

I have joined a new art site called Shadowness, and you can see my artwork their...new and old. I was asked to join another art site in France called Thalisee, and now my paintings, drawings, and poetry can be seen there also. I always am listed under House of Chabrier or HouseofChabrier no spaces.

This is one of the reasons I've been going through old files, and looking at older work. I will put up some of my favorite older work, and I hope you enjoy it.

However, since the site is experiencing upload problems I will publish the paintings above, and publish the others later. Write when I get work, take care of your body because nobody else will. Have a good day, be kind to your love ones, and feed them well. A fed family is usually a happier more relaxed family. Wizards Dragons Dogs Chickens and Such

I've been drawing and painting, inking, and scheming new ideas and concepts. The easiest way for me to do this is just draw, and see where my pencil leads me. I've been considering making Needlepoint canvases out of all the dogs I've painted, but I don't know if there is a desire or need for dog portraits out there. I love drawing Wizards and Fairies, Dragons and sailing ships, but then I do not know if there is any desire to stitch that subject matter. Sooooooooo, I've been painting and drawing what I love, and hopefully I will get some feedback from someone to give me a clue if they should be translated into Needlepoint Canvases.

Here is what I've been working on lately:

The Wizard is riding his Friesian Stallion to wonderful adventures as shown in the border. Everyone should have the opportunity to ride a beautiful horse, and take an adventure away from the hum drum of normal life.

Wizard Defender of Dragons, and all the weak, vulnerable, and helpless. We all should have a Wizard in our life.

The Wonderful Wizard Marion Skydancer defender of the Innocent! Marion Skydancer is a friend, fellow artist, photograper, and the model for all of my Wizards. Lost in Needlepoint and Painting Chickens Portraits and Dogs

I have been Lost in Needlepoint which is somewhat akin to being "Lost in Space" (play eerie music and cue sound affects) ! I have been designing, painting, drawing, researching, reading books, stitching, and purchasing thread for almost 2 years now. I have found that all stitch guides are not created equal. I have found that black plastic spiral books, are small, handy, and filled with information. Hard back books with glossy beautiful pictures are a feast for the eyes, but not as informative and wonderful to own and carry around. I've learned some people in this industry filled with so many women are lovely, generous with information, kind, caring and sharing and just terrific, and some are not, just like in the real world. Go figure! I've learned about mono canvas, interlock, penelope, Zweigart, and stitched on all. Now I know from hands on experience why Zweigart Mono canvas is the canvas of choice to stitch on. I've learned about 2" margins, and so many holes to the inch. This has all taken time, and a complete immersion in Needlepoint at all levels. I'm 63 years old this year so time is very precious to me. Needlepoint Canvases, thread, and Acrylic paint has literally encroached on every area of my house. It's like I was invaded by Aliens from Mars, and they drop little snippets of Kreinik, Rainbow Gallery, DMC Cotton threads all over the house. I sometimes even find them in my bed. My husband is a patient man, and thank God, loves and encourages me in all of my endeavors. I still have stacks of New Needlepoint canvases to paint, more to stitch, and still more to design. I haven't even drawn anything for Holidays, special events, or spooky Halloween. I haven't put up all the dogs I've designed, or painted the original of my Dog Lobo who went to Dog Heaven 2 years ago. He kind of got me into stitching because I want a pillow for my couch with his image on it. I guess I better stop musing about my Needlepoint Life History, make my husbands coffee, and up load more of the watercolor images I've been working on since the studio became too hot to work in. The Acrylic Paints are permanent so they are banished from the house, and must only be used in the Studio.

I want to turn some of these chickens and Roosters into Needlepoint Patterns, and I'm sure eventually the Dog Portraits and the Chickens will find Needlepoint canvas homes. If there is anything in the natural or supernatural world you would love to stitch or see in Needlepoint let me know. I will have to post some of my images of Dragons, Mermaids and Mermen, and of course Wizards. See I could paint and design until I drop from exhaustion, but write when I get work....hug your loved ones, and be kind to strangers and familiars alike. Being kind is a much better policy for your life than being mean spirited, vindictive, thoughtless, or cruel. Needlepoint Beta Canvas and Dog Watercolor Portraits

I've been busy working on Needlepoint canvases, and doing some watercolor paintings in my home when the studio gets too hot. It's been hot and humid this summer, but San Diego probably still has the best weather in the whole country. My tropical plants are doing well. Canvases at JellyBeanStock are selling briskly, and I'm painting away on canvases getting ready for Trunk shows in the fall.

I take requests so I've painted one of my Beta canvases with a background. Remember Beta are fresh water fish, and thus the plants I paint with them will not come from tropical oceans. However, that said if you want coral I will pretend the Beta live in a fish bowl, and their new owner bought them some coral for decoration.

I've also been painting watercolors of Chickens, and dogs for the fun of it, and to keep out of the heat. I will put some of this art work up for your enjoyment, and hope you will write when I get more work.

Children's Hand Print Zoo Animals for Needlepoint

James and I have been very busy printing hands on Needlepoint Canvases. James is my five year old God Son, and I have been painting his hands, printing with them, and then he cheerfully goes and washes off the paint. We are going to make some more hand prints in different colors, but this is what our collaboration has produced so far. Now a couple of the canvases got some extra spots of paint on them, but working with a child of five, eager to help is fun, and paint does happen. If you should want your child's or grandchild's, or significant other child's hand print just buy the canvas and paint their hand with Acrylic paint. Try to position the hand so the animal semi-makes sense, or if you just want to stitch a Zoo Animal or Aquarium make-believe fish order these canvases from Jelly Bean Stock. James and I have a few more animals to hand stamp, and then I do the painting of the different critters. We had fun making these for you, and I hope you have a great deal of fun stitching them. Some have glitter, all are brightly colored, and all are 10" X 10" canvases Zweigart 18 count, but the borders are different widths depending on where Jame's hand ended up on the canvas.

Here are the silly little canvases that make me smile, and were so much fun to create for you!!!

These small ten inch by ten inch canvases can be obtained by going to Jelly Bean Stock, and James and I will soon be using his hand to make more Zoo animals and pretend creatures of the deep especially for you!
I have been learning stitches from the Needlepoint 101 book, and perhaps I might even know how to do more than the tent stitch and the Basket weave stitch. Everything takes time, but half the fun is the journey getting there. Write when I get work, and enjoy your day whatever you do!

New Triceratops Babies Needlepoint Canvas

Well, I have finished a new group of Baby Dinos, but this time they are Triceratops babies. Cute as can be, and ready to stitch up for your Needlepointing pleasure. I want my viewer to know that all of these canvases are designed by me, drawn up on the canvas by me, and then painted by me. Jellybeanstock North represents and distributes my work, and does all their own painting also. None of our work or designs are shipped out to other services, countries, or nations. It's all made in America with our own little hands. We may be old, but we still have our skills and our talents. If you purchase one of my Dinos you are purchasing something made by me. I have no minions, no helpers, except my assistant Ale, and she went to Art school with my son, so she is qualified to come to my aid when necessary. I also come to her aid also, and I will put up the cutest quilt that was auctioned off to raise money for her son's Kindergarten class. But first the baby Dinos, and I will explain how the quilt was made later.

These are the Five new baby Triceratops that will soon be seen at JellyBeanStock, and you can call Kim and order them right away. Thank you, to the lovely woman who ordered a baby dino already, and they will be shipped along with all my other completed canvases to Jellybeanstock Wednesday June 1. Thank you for the order, and blessing on your home and hearth for supporting our endeavors.

Now, this is the quilt made for James Shannahan's Kindergarten class. The squares of cotton were cut by Mrs. Dean, the teacher, the children's individual handprints were painted and applied to the squares by Ale and her friend Heather. Ale brought the squares to me, and I painted each hand print to look like a Zoo animal. She told me the children's personalities because she works in the class room, and I tried to paint an animal that suited the handprint and the child. Mrs. Dean then sewed all the Zoo Jungle Print strips to the squares, and made a wonderful quilt to raffle off to the parents.

Here is what the process looked like!

Now you can see how the painted Zoo Hand Animals became a quilt. The Children each wrote their own names, and I tried to preserve the actual hand print so the parents could see their own child's hand. I added hooves, paws, hands and feet below the finger tips of the child. Each child's hand told me which animal they were to be, and Ale was the person transporting the painted square to the drying table, and bringing me a new square to paint. A very fun project, and after Mrs. Dean sewed our masterpiece together we were all delighted with the results. I may not be rich, but I do have fun every day. Thanks to little children, new projects, and having work to keep me busy.

Peacocks Elephants India Oh MY

Seeing that beautiful and talented women from India have decided to follow my blog, and comment (Very much Appreciated!) I decided to put up some sculpting I did for the Four Seasons Hotel and Resort in Goa India. These were sculpted by me out of 4 pound density foam, then sprayed with Automotive Primer which is why they are gray. Then I sanded resprayed and sanded some more before they were transported to Mexico, a manufacturing plant and cast into Fiberglass parts.

Now , because my viewer in India like Peacocks, and very decorative art. I will put up some of the Peacock Images I did in Etched glass, a process where I sand blasted the glass after applying and cutting a mask of the Peacocks.

I got carried away, and added oil paintings, stained glass, and other things from my portfolio other than etched glass. Now, I will put up some Peacocks done in oil and Alkyd on board, and some done in Prismacolor Pencils on black paper. I hope you like!

I again got carried away, and added other things. I thought perhaps you might like to see the two peacock panels side by side. I also added some of my oil paintings of Laura and her sister Norma in costume and with umbrellas in my garden. The pink roses are planted outside my kitchen window so I have something beautiful to look at while doing the dishes. I hope everyone enjoys todays offerings. Beach Dinosaur Needlepoint Canvases 2011

My happy Dinosaurs have gone to the beach with their families, and are now taking strolls down by the surf and sand in these new hand painted Needlepoint Canvases. Don't ask me what possesses me when I choose to paint dinosaurs enjoying modern life in Dinoland. These are just fun, colorful, and for all of those needlepoint afficianado's of everything prehistoric. I have a few more to do in the series, but I've already resumed painting some of the bird canvases I started a while back. Plus, I started painting some more chickens and irises just because I felt like it. I may jump around, but I do try to complete everything in between laundry, dishes, cooking, and every-once-in-a-while cleaning. There is too much I want to accomplish, and too many things that hold my interest to put much effort into competing for the best little housewife in America award. There are no prizes in America for being the best little house wife in the world, and no one ever says thank you..."Looks Terrific!!!" It's better to be a really good cook, and an even better artist and just overlook the "other" woman's work that never gets done. That's my story...and I'm sticking to it. I've painted this peacock before, but each time I do it I strive to improve the colors and layout. I like this version the best so far, and I especially like the border.

Dancing Dino's for Jelly Bean Stock New Needlepoint Designs

Just in time for New Babies, grandchildren, great grandchildren, or just because these Dancing Dinos make you laugh here are some fun New designs for your Needlepoint Stitching. Wizard of the Woods

Besides designing Needlepoint Canvases sometimes I just need to draw and paint. After working all morning on some cute Needlepoint Canvases which I will put up shortly, I took a nap, and then painted my friend Marion Skydancer, an Artist, Model, and talented Photographer.http://skydancer-stock.deviantart.com/ Cute was too much, and I just wanted to paint with no sketching, no lines, and no agenda. Sometimes one should just use their own talent to entertain oneself. That's what I did this afternoon, and I feel better for it. Here are two little paintings I did using Acrylic ( the same paint box I'm using to paint all the tropical birds, fish, plants, and dinosaurs). I painted on black paper, because it was in a stack close at hand, and I just enjoyed myself. I will put up the new finished Needlepoint Canvases tomorrow, but don't be surprised if some other art sneaks into this blog on stealthy little cat feet unwilling to be quiet in the background of my mind. My art...all of it....likes to be expressed, and I can't just do needlepoint canvases every minute of every day. I guess I will need to find a balance. Work on the work in the morning, and do something free in the afternoon.

I've got to go check on the Spaghetti I'm making for dinner, and make some home made garlic bread to go with it so everyone enjoy the rest of your day or evening. Do what you love! and of course Write when I get work!

Fabulous Philodendrons and Jungle Plants

I have been gardening in pots, and buying plants to use in my Needlepoint designs. The gardening and watering gets me away from the art tables and outside for fresh air and a fresh outlook. At least that's my goal. Since I last posted I've been out visiting Needlepoint shops, going to Rainbow Gallery for excellent floss and color cards for reference. Thank you John and Sally for the Grand Tour, and all the wonderful information on how the floss is spun from different threads. Rainbow Gallery is an amazing place, and their thread selections as you all know are fabulous.

We, Barb, Kim, Lynzee, and I went to Queen Anne's Stitches to meet with new friends and old and show some of our new designs. What a wonderful shop Heidi has, and so many lovely customers working on their needlepoint and getting tips from Sherrie. A big thank you to Sharon Quick for introducing us to this wonderful shop, and giving us so much useful information and help. Needlepoint woman are the best! I'm busy painting on the canvases you all took a shine to, and will soon be painting floral bell pulls, chicks and spring flowers, more chickens, rabbits and Daffodils, and the list goes on.

We also took the Grand Tour of Aristeia a beautiful, warm, light filled, old building appointed with exquisite good taste and style. The Needlework is amazing, and the setting is both warm and welcoming. It is a setting that makes you glad to be affiliated with the Needlepoint Industry, and happy to be designing new canvases for an old, respected art form.

Here are some of the latest finished canvases, painted with love, and designed from my own plants and bird photos.

I hope you enjoy the new handpainted canvases. I know Jellybeanstock north is working on Judaica, Talis Bags, Floral Purses, Dancing Rabbis, some new Witch canvases, and an altogether eclectic mix of subject matter for your stitching pleasure. I will continue to read books on Needlepoint, peruse stitch guides, experiment, design, and water the plants. That includes my mother Cymbidiums that have joined my plants after traveling from Los Altos their old home to here in San Diego where my plants are making them welcome. My mother died last year, and her plants long loved and enjoyed are finding new love and attention from me. Her passing does not mean everything she loved and cared for will evaporate into thin air. We, her children, grandchildren, and Great grandchildren, are taking into our home treasured memories of a wonderful mother, and a very hardworking woman. Her belt for clipping the roses is hanging with her clippers in my kitchen. Her Cymbidium Orchids have joined my jungle, and are standing up straight and tall once again, and once they have more color and body to their leaves I will divide and transplant them into new pots. You will soon be seeing orchids in my needlepoint designs. Her leaving this Earth to go flying around the room as Emmy Lou Harris describes in her song has left me both uplifted and deeply saddened.

Painting a Mural for a Dr Seuss Musical

My lovely niece Mary Rose was in a Seussical Musical, and played Gertrude McFuzz a lovely bird with a very small inadequate tail. She sang beautifully, gesticulated, and was a great little actress. She shone like a star, and everyone had a wonderful time. I was asked to design and paint the 16 foot by 16 foot mural, and my sister-in-law helped by getting paint, picking me up, buying lunch, and was terrific at following instructions and painted like a pro. She brought in a lovely agile young woman, to help paint and we all had a great deal of fun. The following pictures are of Mary Rose, the mural and a cast of characters. Enjoy!!

Obviously this was a fun project, and after we painted the mural in two days I went on to visit JellyBeanStock North (I'm the southern division just North of the border), and we visited two needle point shops Aristeia, and Queen Anne's Needle Point shop, and on to Fleur de Paris for more Canvas (hello and thankyou to Maria), and also the Disneyland of Floss and thread manufacturing Rainbow Gallery (Wonderful visit with John and Sally, thank you for all the advice and info). I will blog about each place seperately, and tell you about all the wonderful adventures we at JellyBeanStock have been having. Say YES to life, explore the world, and enjoy each minute. Tropical Birds on Black 18Ct Mono Canvas

Well, I think the second rug is finished, and this one is painted on 18ct Zweigart Black Mono Canvas, and I still have to double check to make sure all the holes are clear. I've been using my trusty air brush and compressor to blow out the holes, but sometimes I don't catch it in time or put the paint on too thick. I have some pillows to finish up with the bird images, and then I move on to the last of my orders from the TNNA show in Long Beach. First to complete is a customized mask I'm doing for Kent, and then another custom canvas with my Eagle and Flag image, but done on a larger canvas with space for eagle scout badges. Remember, I am always happy to adapt my designs to your needs, and I hope you are seeing some canvases and designs you would like to stitch and have in your home.

Here is the Tropical Bird canvas on Black, and yes it does look slightly different. Every time I paint a canvas it seems to take on an individual life of it's own.

I will finish the pillow painting of similar images, and then move on to new subject matter. I have many new designs forming in my head, and clamoring to be drawn. There are still plenty of my designs drawn up that still need to be painted. So being an artist is a fine balancing act, between the creating of new, and the completion of the old. Finished Tropical Bird Rug on White 13 count Zweigart Canvas

TAAA DAAA I think I am finished with the Exotic Tropical Bird Rug on White Zweigart 13 count canvas. I have already been working on the same design on Black 18 count Zweigart Canvas, and I'm very happy with the results. It's a little harder to keep the holes clean on the 18 count, but the colors are more vibrant on the black. Both look really beautiful and alive which was what I'm aiming for. Some people have voiced that it's sad to cover up the beautiful painting, but that's silly. If you want a painting, and are willing to spend multiple thousands of dollars, then buy the original. However, this is painted by the same hands as the original and looks just as good, but stitching will make the image 3 dimensional, and incredibly exotic. It is simply amazing what a gifted stitcher can do with a canvas, and I enjoy stitching my own canvases so why shouldn't you? I love adding beautiful threads by Rainbow Gallery, Kreinik, DMC cotton and Pearl to my canvases. I love the thickness of a ribbon or braid sparkling where I have painted metalic gold. The paints I use are the highest quality, and Jellybean Stock uses the heaviest pigmented Acrylic Paint, costly, but quality shows. When I use pearl paint, or glitter in my paint that indicates I see Kreinik blending threads or braids in addition to the normal thread you choose. It's your piece of art to stitch once you have bought it, and it is up to you, your skill, and your imagination to take it to the next level. I left the background white because Wendy at Aristeia asked me to. I am considering adding palms or leaves to another version in the border. The only thing I ask of you if you buy my canvases is that you don't paint on them. Change the colors, by changing the threads, but don't paint on my canvases. Each canvas is individually painted by me, and if you want something different than don't buy my canvases. I read on a blog recently how to photograph a canvas, take the photo into the computer and then print out a smaller size on your printer. It's your canvas, you bought it...so Why NOT? Because that dear reader of blogs is a violation of my copyright, and I am the only person who has the right to make copies of my designs. All of my canvases are based on my photos, my birds, my plants, and my hard work. If you want different colors, or a different color scheme just write and ask. If you want something personalized with lettering or larger or smaller size just write and ask. Handpainted Needlepoint Canvases Working out the Details

I'm still painting on Needlepoint Rugs, Pillows, and 10 Inch Inserts. When I finish one group then I add some new ones to the mix. I'm also changing some of the breeds of birds in the Crowned Jewels, when I put the design on Pillows or Inserts. Changes things up a bit, and I can see if a different color or bird might be more interesting. These are all original samples, and I have a little more freedom when painting them. The Rug has to have tight details painted on the Hummingbird, and the Amazon Parrot on the Right will get his cute, curious face painted in today. The Hyacinth Macaw has his three coats of Ultramarine Blue, and his darks and highlights painted in. Now I just have to refine all the details and finish him. I don't think there will be any background color painted. The original has blue black, but I've been asked to leave the background free from paint to leave the color up to the buyer and Needlepoint stitcher. Here are the canvases I worked on all of yesterday:

This is the large Rug Image 30" X 40" and I put on more coats of paint for uniform coverage yesterday, and worked on the lower right parrots, the wings and tail feathers of the Peacock, the face and feathers of the Crowned Crane, more coats on Ultramarine Blue to the Hyacinth Macaw, and painted the faces of the upper left parrots.

Today I will finished the Red Spectacled Parrot, the Crowned Crane, the hummingbird, and the last parrot on the right. I like all the highlights, and the deep darks that define the images to be just right, and the image to have a cohesive look and glow to it.

The Eyes of the Peacock need a little more clean up and definition, I like the Toucan, and these lower Parrots are just about finished.

I took pictures of my Parrot Marconi in our Grape Arbor many years ago, and that is how I came up with this design for these 20" X 20" Pillow Canvases. That said I did 3 30" X 30" Gold Leaf Alkyd and Oil Paintings of these images, and the pillow designs are just pieces of the larger works of art.

This is my Marconi in among my grapes at my old house, enjoying the arbor and the coolness of grapes. This is the start of a 20" X 20" Pillow Design.

This is another in the series of Mexican Double Yellow Headed Parrots stealing grapes. This is a 20" X 20" Canvas, and I'm painting it in Acrylics.

This is an almost finished but the border 20" X 20" Pillow Design changed a little from the "Crowned Jewels" design, but I would still co-ordinate and decorate the same room as the Crowned Jewels Rug. I have wanted to paint a Toco Toucan, and the two parrots at the bottom are mine...Carmen on the Left and Marconi on the Right.

This is the other 20" X 20" Pillow painted to co-ordinate with the Crowned Jewels Rug, but not to copy it exactly.

Keelbilled Toucan painted, but still have work to do on the other two toucans, the orchids, and the butterfly.
These are 13" X 13" Canvases with an image size of 10" X 10". Still alot of work to do, but I don't like to waste time, paint, or sit and watch paint dry.

Working on Bird Rugs and Smaller Needlepoint Panels

Over the weekend I painted on the large rug some more, and as is my habit while waiting for layers to dry I painted on some smaller canvases. Now these canvases of birds are only 13" x 13.5" and are on 18 count canvas rather than the 13 count for the larger rugs. I did them because when I paint large canvases or murals for my personal work I will often paint a smaller section of the large overall canvas. This gives me the opportunity to "practice" and learn what I'm going to be dealing with on the larger surface. It's also less intimidating, and allows me to finish something more rapidly and with ease. It's more comfortable than facing an extremely large canvas cold turkey so to speak. I thought perhaps that is true of Needlepointers also, so I decided to design up some small canvases using the exact same birds as the large canvas, and the exact same size of birds so the needlepoint work will be exactly the same. The idea of tearing out stitches on a big canvas would be discouraging, and irritate me, but a smaller one that I could finish more quickly and had less of an investment in would not be as trying. Plus when you work on the rug, and it's a 13 count canvas it will be easier and faster.

I envision pattern stitches in the area I painted Gold, and a different pattern for the cream background. I also see beads, but I love sparkley threads and bling. Tell me what you think, and if you like the direction I'm going. Designers need feedback too, and I need more information about the threads available that will give me the shiny look I want for the birds, but I don't want it to feel rough or sharp to the hand or cheek. That's in case they get made into pillows. My intrepid assistant Ale` sees them as purses, and I also want to draw them up as vests. I am no longer skinny and cute, but in my youth I embroidered and stitched vests with Koi, Peacocks, Sequins, beads, pearls, and loved wearing them. In my old age...I might as well enjoy the beautiful costume designing of my youth. I would rather wear velvet, satin, Maribou feathers, Sequins and beads, and Needlepoint hand made and special then store bought and dull. I am such a silly woman. Painting in Details, and working out spacing. Working out dark against light, and creating depth and pattern. This is the bottom of the rug panel, and I will be working on the rug and trying to finish it today. If not finished I believe I will come close.

This is the top part of the panel, and I've been working on the Parrots feather details, beaks, and faces and eyes. I like to have good expressions and eyes that are alert and curious. The Peacock is of course more self absorbed, and has an expression of disdain and disinterest in the other birds. There is always an untold story in my paintings.

This panel is 13 x 13 inches and the three birds are exactly the same size as the rug birds. This would be a "Do I really want to invest the time and money in a super large canvas?" Will I enjoy stitching this and actually finish it? I paint small portions of my really big canvases for the exact same reason, and to work out the details and problems on something smaller and less intimidating. I see this canvas and the other ones like it as tote bag or purse inserts, or pillows that will be edged by a wide black band, gold piping, and elegant brocade backing or....it could be all cream white, beige, and straw colors or greens for a light, bright, tropical, beach look. I tend to picture complete rooms when I design these canvases. I actually don't know what other designers do, or think while they design. I would really like to speak to stitch guide writers, and see or hear how they envision these canvases. That is an open invitation for dialog!!??! :)

This Peacock is done, or almost done, and is again the same size as the Rug Peacock, but done on a 13 X 13.5 inch canvas done on 18 count mono.

These Toucans are started, and the one in the foreground is the same size as the Rug Toucan. The other Toucans are just added for composition and design purposes. I will try to get these finished today, and they are also 13" X 13" white mono canvas 18Count so you can get details on the smaller flowers, butterflies, and birds. The Large Rug is 13 Count white Mono, for ease of stitching and finishing.

This is the last of this series (so far), and is not finished but on the way. I hope you like the direction all this work is going. I have a great many more designs to paint, work on, stitch, and produce.

I finally went to my doctor, and got perscription medicine for the Sciatic Nerve problem and it makes me sleepy, but I still get plenty of work done. Thank God, and my doctor the pain is starting to ease up. It's still there, but I'm able to walk, bend, and move with out bone screaming pain. My mom said getting old wasn't for sissies. She, of course, was right.

Please if you have any stitch or thread ideas for these panels don't hesitate to write and suggest. I love floss, Kreinic, Rainbow, DMC, but I am not an expert, and do not know all the thread manufacturers. I am sure there are women out there with more knowledge then me, and I would appreciate any input you could give me. Write when I get work! Tropical Bird Needlepoint Canvases Clamoring to be Finished

I keep painting away, filling in more details, fixing tone and color, and still the birds have more to be worked on. Shipped another Rhino today, and then got back to work on the Crowned Jewels. These canvases are filled with simple shapes, strong color, precise details, but I think they will stitch easily. The larger canvases are done on 13count White Mono, and a couple of the smaller ones are painted on 18count canvas. I will resume painting the large Black 13Count Mono Canvas with the same images of Tropical Birds once I get all the colors and patterns resolved on the white mono. I will then also resume painting on the Cockatoos and Magnolia Blossoms.

There is a lot of work going on at once, but it's a good way to work out details, remember how you painted the beak or which colors you consistently use on a Scarlet Macaw or a Toucan's beak. Little details may change, but the colors should remain fairly consistent I think.

Getting the details right on the Toucans Beak, and making sure the parrots look shaped and have dimension. Using the Peacock feathers as a foil for the Toucan, and using the pattern of the Peacock shoulder to add texture, interest, and muted contrast to the bright beak. I love painting birds!!!

I finished My Green and Purple and Gold Peacock, and the Cockatoos are coming along nicely. I will still be working on the Crowned Jewels Needlepoint Canvases, and the Cockatoos today. I work on several canvases at once so there is no waiting around down time from painting. I work until I can't keep my eyes open, drink some ice water, drink some coffee, talk to Barb on speaker phone (she is better than coffee for waking me up), and keep painting until I need to take a nap. Some Needlepoint people have expressed concern about trusting or having faith in a new company getting the work out. The one thing that I can guarantee is that the Artists of Jelly Bean Stock understand deadlines, and understand ASAP yesterday. I personally had to sculpt, paint, etch, and draw artwork that was part of buildings such as the Mirage, Ceasars Palace, Golden Nugget, McDonald's, and that had to be finished for Grand Openings. To us a deadline is a deadline, and everything is due immediately if not sooner. Barb may be 83, but she has worked her entire life in producing art for Fashion Illustrations for Newspapers, painting in watercolor, oils, acrylics, and gouache for murals for McDonald's National and International, Burger King, Carl's Jr.s, Bob's Big Boy, Norms, Tony Romas, and countless other Vegas Hotels, Casinos. Our word is our bond, and our work is our life. We realize the trust you are puting in us, and will always respect the amount of faith you have put in us and honor that trust. I know that the product we send you will be painted better than the original, and I know this because any product you are buying that is signed Chabrier is painted by me and signed by me. These are the panels that are in progress in the Studio, and the line drawings on canvas are in the pile that is waiting to be started to be painted or waiting to be finished. I could paint forever if God only gave us longer lives with less pain. That said I will take the time I'm given, and use this talent God gave me and keep painting to my hearts content. Remember, direct your thoughts to the thing you want to get done and accomplish, and then just do it to the best of your abilities. You are the only person who has any control over you and what you do. This is your life, choose wisely, take care of yourself, and do what makes you feel fulfilled and happy. That's my "Old Lady" sage advice for the day, and now I'm going to take my own advice and go paint. That is what makes me happy. New Large Handpainted Canvases for Rugs

Well, today I am sharing a number of works in progress. I don't usually speak about my process, but I work on a number of things at once. Why, because sometimes I want the work to thoroughly dry in between coats of paint, or because I have mixed up plenty of paint for something like leaves and so I just keep painting. People tend to say I have "mad skills", and I know I am skilled in many mediums, but that comes from doing not talking. When you want to get something accomplished, don't talk about it...DO IT! That seems counter intuitive to blogging, but the blogging should occur after the task is completed or well on the way to completion. On Deviant Art I have done tutorials to show other artists how I start from a drawing, and paint a watercolor. Here I will show some of the Needlepoint canvases in progress. The blue tape around the edge, or border is to protect against accidents, spills, fingerprints, or just air blown paint. It's a necessary precaution to ensure a clean product. Here are some of the canvases I am now working on:

I have taken a great deal of pictures of Magnolia Tree blossoms, and spent countless hours photographing and printing the pictures so I can understand and paint accurately the Magnolia Tree and it's flowers. Mad skills as people call them are based, on doing your homework, practice, keen observation, and then just painting. It doesn't matter whether or not you paint, sculpt, carve, or etch you have to learn about your subject and know it. That is why I buy flowers and trees, plant them, photograph them, and then draw and paint from photographs and life. Try it You will like it, and while doing so you also will acquire "Mad Skills".

It keeps me out of trouble, and entertains me until I grow weary and crawl into bed to take a nap. My Sciatic nerve in my leg is still killing me, but as long as there are tasks to accomplish and paintings to paint I will just curse the fates, walk with a cane, take vitamins and buy stock in Extra Strength Excedrin. Plumeria Design for Needlepoint Canvases

I worked on some designs for more Plumeria Handpainted Needlepoint canvases for JellyBeanStock. I like them, but I'm going to do another version that includes butterflies. I started painting on a very large rug canvas done on 13 count Zweigart mono of tropical and exotic birds last night. I would paint all day and all night if my body would let me. I also cleaned up my table, and I'm going to clean it off further today. I may even replace the white butcher paper I keep it covered with. However, that said I will have to move all the phone numbers, notes, and addresses that get written on it's surface to a more permanent location. I am constantly making notes on my tables, thus the butcher paper, I also use paper plates, envelopes, the wall, or whatever is handy to my pen at the moment. I have plenty of notebooks, and they are also filled with information, but information always seems to be coming in when those aforementioned notebooks are nowhere to be found.

Here are the two Plumeria canvases, and I will then photograph and put up some more of the Betta Fish.

The sun is shining, and it's still only 47 degrees outside, and I have plenty of work to do today. I still would enjoy having more art work to do though....so write when you have more work for me. My mother (God rest her soul, for she died last year!) raised 10 children, went back to College in her 50's got her masters degree in Library Science all the while working at Lane Medical Library at Stanford University. I come from a long line of hard working woman and men, and very few people can out work a Vadeboncoeur (my maiden name). So praises on this beautiful sunny day for my ever positive, hardworking, and cheerful mother who taught me how to cook, sew, clean, iron (very Important in Needlepoint Canvas painting), and how to make lemon cream pie when life hands you Lemons. My sweet, good and positive mother is probably cleaning up heaven or baking some heavenly pie even as we speak. Thank you mom for teaching me how to stay on task and accomplish my dreams. You are gem and a pearl of great price. Barb is my other mother or Art mother, and she is the matriarch of JellyBeanStock at age 83. Pretty soon 84, and still designing, painting, and going strong, thank you God. I talk to her every day, coordinate painting and shipping so our orders can go out on time and together. Needlepoint Canvas Art and Hand painted Canvases

I have been working all week on new designs, getting out orders, and drawing up canvases from my original art that people expressed an interest in. I paint what I love so none of this is a hardship, and most of the time it is just sheer pleasure. In my younger years I painted on large McDonald Land Murals in Acrylic so painting on Needlepoint canvas with Acrylics is like visiting with an old dear friend. I am painting on both the 18 count Mono and the 13 count Mono Zweigart canvas that we at JellyBeanStock purchase from Fleur de Paris.

This week I painted on another companion piece for the Koi pillows, two Plumaria Designs, some more Betta Fish (I know I'm getting carried away, but I love the colors and the form!).

I will post the Plumaria tomorrow, for I need to put in the copyright info, and I'm thinking of adding some butterflies to the canvases. I will probably put up what I've done, and then do two more canvases with the design altered a little, and add my butterflies. These are painted from the Plumaria plants in my front yard, and I have a Passion Flower Plant that has been taking over the garden which is home to thousands of butterflies. My yard in the summer looks like butterfly heaven. I you want tons of butterflies plant a Passion Flower vine. However, that said I also have roses, Irises, Daffodils, Plumeria, Hibiscus, Gardenia, Geraniums, Lilies, and the list goes on because there isn't a flowering plant I don't fall in love with. Plus I love plants with decorative, colorful leaves, so all I have to do is step out into the front or back yard with my trusty camera, or a pair of scissors and bring the colors of nature into my studio. I also plant annuals that strike my fancy, when I want to paint something like pansies. I can't bend down to put them in the ground, but they all seem to do well in my potted garden out front. Life is good with a little soil, and some bright floral colors.

I'm working on the Crowned Jewels Tropical Bird Rug for Wendy at Aristeia, and also working on finishing other canvases. Write when you get work, or if you have any tips for me. I bought a new compressor, just a very quiet, small one from Harbor Freight and tools. It's terrific, and is keeping the canvas hole unclogged and clean. It comes with an airbrush, and works very well. Keep drawing, designing, enjoying life, and having fun. It's cold here, and I'm wearing 4 sweaters to paint in plus a scarf so I have no idea how people stay warm where it's really cold. Needlepoint Koi and Goldfish

I have been painting more Goldfish, and have finished painting one of my Koi Pillows this evening. I cut out fabric, drew up designs, and worked on a two horned African Rhino yesterday. Tomorrow, I will finish the Rhino, and get it ready for shipping. I sometimes let a little time go by before I declare something finished. Sometimes it means I just take a nap or get a good nights sleep, and then look at the canvas or drawing with fresh eyes and a little separation time. That way I don't ship anything that hasn't been double checked, and I make sure it satisfies my inner soul.

Designing Rugs Leopards and Goldfish

Designing large rugs 30" X 40" and one 40" X 48" with the Crowned Jewels of Birds in the center panel. I also drew up a Leopard on a 13ct Zweigart canvas and painted it yesterday. I also painted 4 Goldfish, but finished only three. I need to finish the last one. I went out and bought myself an airbrush compressor this morning so that I could easily blow out the holes and keep the canvas clean on these large rugs. Just using my lung power is beginning to make me a little light headed and dizzy. MY Sciatic Nerve is still giving me problems so getting dizzy on top of pain medication, sharp pains, and falling to the floor, dizzy is not an option. This was my first day out in a month, and I of course over did it, and my leg is behaving like Quasimoto or the Hunch Back of Notre Dame for those who don't remember. I used to be the lovely Esmerelda, and now I bend over and limp like a wicked old witch. Oh well, this too shall pass. Once I bring in the rest of the groceries using my mothers handy dandy Hugo walker on wheels. I will get back to painting and finishing art.

Goldfish Needlepoint Canvases

I spent some time yesterday using up paint by painting these little Goldfish canvases. One is large 16" X 16" and the rest are small, delicate paintings on 8" X 8" canvas. Today is a day for painting an Eagle and Flag painting that will be used to display Eagle Scout Badges earned. I love how people can look at my work, and see beyond what I've drawn, and know how to use the art to celebrate an event or accomplishment in their lives. I better get these little paintings up, and then get to the work at hand. Remember, all these canvases can be purchased from www.jellybeanstock.com/ .

This last Goldfish is the 16" X 16" larger painting. You really can't tell the size of the painting by the details painted on the canvas. This is painted on a Zweigart 13ct white mono canvas. The small 8" X 8" goldfish are painted on Zweigart 18ct white mono canvas. I see a patterned stitch behind them, and I may paint some ideas with that concept in mind when time allows. Shipping Canvases and Painting Goldfish

Yesterday I packed up the Betta Fish, Peacock Canvas, and the finished African Rhino Needlepoint Canvas, and shipped them to JellyBeanStock. Today I spent painting little Goldfish Canvases, and one Large Goldfish Canvas. I have no clue why I got it into my head to paint goldfish, but I am having fun, and enjoying their fluid, curvy, shiny little bodies. I've drawn up quite a few Goldfish and Betta Fish, and it's fun to play with the different colors of paint combinations to achieve a different look for each fish. I've also drawn up Koi and Waterlilies, some Iris and Moths, more Peacocks, and more masks.

My next panels that need to be painted and shipped are a custom Mask of an Evil Queen that looks similar to my naughty devil, but feminine and crowned. I've already started redesigning that canvas. The other panel is also custom of an Eagle, Flag, and will also have space for Eagle Scout Badges to be needlepointed or attached. I also will add the Eagle Scout's name, the date, and what ever else is desired. Custom is my middle name so if you want it...you can have it.

TNNA Needle Point Orders Getting Peacock and Fish Painted

It's a little odd that title ...who would think of painting Peacocks and Fish at the same time. I learned my lesson about 13ct Canvas and the Peacock is the exact size it has always been, but the space around the border is now 3" and looks very good. Now I'm a happy camper. I painted a Red Betta Fish as part of an order, but then painted a Thalo Blue Betta Fish with Gold because I got inspired. The paint was there from the Peacock painting so I just kept painting. I also have drawn up some of the gold fish and put them on 18ct canvas and larger images on 13 ct canvas. I will post the paintings so you get an idea where my brain is taking this. I've been working on a Rhino painting to fill an order, and he is coming out quite well, and will be done today.

Write me if you see anything you like, or would like to see. I draw and paint all the time, except for when making dinner and trying to avoid Sciatic Nerve Pain. I will Zen/Paint my way above the pain and float in the euphoria of painting Needlepoint Canvases for the hard working, deserving, good women of America. TNNA Needle Point Orders Getting them out!

I've been painting canvases, filling orders, and totally having fun getting the work out. I love painting Needlepoint Canvases. We at JellyBeanStock telephone conference and talk morning, noon, and night. We are constantly learning, and sharing painting methods just as we did in our youth when we were all in the same room. I'm painting away on my Peacock Canvases, the masks are done, and so are the Giraffes large and small. I've completed one Eagle and flag, but have another couple of custom versions to go.

My Sciatic Nerve is still trying to kill me, but I refuse to let it get me down, and when I can't walk, or sit and paint I just draw up to canvas ideas. I obviously love every critter known to God and Man and I guess because it's too cold to go swimming (my favorite sport) I'm drawing fish. I am drawing up more betta fish, which I've been given and kept alive for years, and Gold Fish and Koi. I love the way fish move and undulate, I love their sparkly scales, and their varied pattern. I think that lends itself to Needlpoint. I'm also studying my stitch guides, and my Anchor Manual of Needlework which has been my stitching Bible since I was a girl of 16. That's many, many moons ago, for I am now in the Twilight of my life.

I wake up everyday happy, no matter how my back feels, and I look forward to everyday filled with painting, designing, and creating. I drew up the rug version which will be 30" X 40" of the Crowned Jewels Bird Design I was painting at the show. I am listening to the owners of the Shops, and Wendy at Aristeia said the Birds would look good as a rug, and she thought my cockatoo in the magnolia tree would look good as a rug. I had already started stitching a rug for myself in wool and the tent stitch on 10 ct canvas, but I bow to the superior knowledge and experience of people who have been in the business for years and will paint the designs on 13 count thread only for such a big rug. I also will put a great deal of extra space around the painted panel itself. I painted a 20" X 20" 13 ct. canvas with the Peacock and found out on a 13ct canvas I ended up crowding the blank border to the edge, because of my counted thread border. In other words to make the painted border look proportionally correct I had to steal space from the blank edging. So I finished that painting which ended up with a 1 1/2 " blank border, looked terrific but was not correct, and started over on a 24" X 24" 13ct. canvas and painted the exact same size image of the Peacock, added the same border, and know it floats pleasantly in the center of the canvas with 3" of space all the way around it. Thank You very much to Trubey for giving me some very needed advice on this subject! The lesson is now firmly planted in my brain, and I know to start with a much larger canvas when Painting on 13 count.

I received a Goody envelope from Fleur de Paris , and now have samples of their Metalic Mono canvas, and the Black/Opalescent Metalic Mono with flecks of color calls out for me to use it to paint Mardi Gras and Venetian Masks on. I also like the Black and White Tweed Mono Canvas, and I'm happy it is floating around in my brain now waiting to find a design that is just right to be painted on it. There is not enough time in the day, to design, draw, paint, and cut all the canvases my mind wants to create.

TNNA Needlepoint Show 2011 Tropical Reef New Hand Painted Canvases

I was happy to attend my very first TNNA Needlpoint Show with the other JellyBeanStock Artists. We all started our Art career at JBI a seating company that does the whole package for Fast food Franchises. Barb has been a life long friend, mentor, and best art buddy in the business. She encouraged me to paint this series of Tropical Reef fish, and wants me to paint more. I used to Scuba Dive, and snorkel among the fish on the California Coast, and also got to see some beautiful underwater life while snorkeling in the waters of Cancun. I will be painting some smaller canvases, and some detailed miniatures. It's amazing what a stitcher can do to indicate shells, coral, barnacles, and all the other large and small varieties of life under the sea. A woman was stitching at Fleur de Paris booth a simply stunning underwater scene on the body of a fish. There is so much creativity in every human being yearning to come out and be expressed. Needlework is a collaboration between the imaginations of many, and that includes the people who just make the threads and beads. A woman could get addicted to beautiful flosses, braids, threads, and silks. I'm fast becoming a floss-ahollic!?!!

TNNA Needlepoint Canvas Tropical Bird Painting

While at the TNNA Needlepoint show I painted on a canvas of tropical birds I had started at home. I brought along many unfinished, and just started canvases to show how I work. I also brought along original watercolors to show how I let my watercolor painting inspire my needlepoint designs. I enjoy stitching my unpainted needlepoint canvases while looking at the original watercolor and choosing my DMC floss colors based on my painting. The canvases I paint for the needlepoint community are painted while looking at my original art that inspired the canvas. Other times with canvases like the Peacocks or the Mardi Gras Masks the art work it self speaks to me and dictates how it is to be painted. In other words I don't start out to paint a black jester, or a Aztec Warrior these "characters" much like protagonists in a book declare themselves as I paint. Then they refuse to go away, and demand to be finished. This is why on some of my prototype canvases the holes get filled in, after I've tried to make a picture with a light skinned human being with blond hair and blue eyes female, and the "face" demands to be darker, masculine, bearded etc. Who knew art could be so recalcitrant and demanding.

Enough about the masks. Here is a photo of the Original Art of the Parrots and Birds of The Crowned Jewels, and the almost completed canvas painted at the trade show. A big hello to Wendy at Aristeia in Santa Monica who was so enthusiastic about my paintings and the Rhino. You do have a fantastic, beautiful, and incredible new store. I don't know what the old store looked like, but this store looks like a very elegant, fun, and well stocked with threads home. What a wonderful place to shop, visit, take classes, and needlepoint. The Needlepoint Canvas has been adjusted so that their is a little more space between the birds, and the Peacock's back is a little more defined. The final version is going to have a little more neck on the African Crowned Crane, and a little more space around the hummingbird. I design differently for the Needlepoint Industry trying to make more space for decorative Needlework, and counted thread space between the birds or animals. I don't like only one or two stitches between the different birds.

The top image is the original gouache opaque watercolor painting of an Indian Rhino on 2ply Illustration Board, and the bottom canvas is the Rhino I originally painted and Displayed at the TNNA Trade Show in the Long Beach Convention Center 2011. This canvas is designed to be a big pillow for a Black or Brown Leather Couch in a TV room or den. I usually picture the artwork in a room when I design it, and this series is for all the people who love to watch Nova's Nature, Animal Planet, and the Discovery Channel. I love animals and nature and that's why many of my designs center around the natural world.

As promised the next two images are primates. The first is an Old Silver Back male painted in Gouache on Illustration Board, and the second is a watercolor of a lemur painted on Arches watercolor paper.

The top watercolor painting is of another Lemur and orchids, and the bottom watercolor is the companion piece that hangs with it in my hallway. These are done in transparent watercolor, and eventually may turn themselves into a Needlepoint canvas for your stitching pleasure. TNNA Needlepoint Show 2011 Floral Pillows and Bell Pulls

I introduced only a few floral designs at the TNNA Needlepoint Show 2011, but I have quite a few offerings drawn up and ready to paint. I live on an acre, and love flowers. I used to buy bulbs by the 100's and plant them religiously every fall. Here in southern California bulbs sometimes bloom with the advent of winter rains, and Iris bloom summer, fall, winter, spring. My roses are blooming now after all the winter storms we had. Obviously, I love gardening and love flowers. I plant for the bees, the butterflies, the birds, the lovely scent, and the color to please my eye. The flowers I draw for my Needlepoint canvases are the flowers I grow. I have huge pots out front my brother Robert gave me, that I'm growing Plumeria, Roses, Gardenia, and Cactus in. Here is what I painted for the Jellybeanstock booth, and for my own artistic and gardening pleasure.

I had these Lilies planted by my kitchen window for years, and though I have Calla Lilies and other colors these pink Oriental Lilies are still my favorite. They just can't take the digging done by German Shepherd puppies, and inquisitive dogs looking for a cool spot to lie on in the summer heat.

Woman and men at the TNNA Needlepoint Show in the Long Beach Convention Center seemed to really like my Venetian, Mardi Gras, and general Masks. These started to design themselves because I wanted to stitch with my Kreinick and Rainbow Gallery threads. I just wanted to stitch something exotic and glamorous, and the idea of masks and feathers called out to me. In my younger days I loved to stitch sequins and beads to velvet, fur, and satin. TNNA Needle Point Show Out of Africa Series

Some of my favorite canvases to design for the TNNA needlepoint show are the Out of Africa Series. It started with my Indian Rhino Gouache Watercolor Painting which has nothing to do with Africa. Then I just wanted to paint a Lion and the whole series took off from there. The border came into being because I love borders, and then thought why not have the animals racing around the border. That brought in the Masai from the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya and this series was born featuring the Kenya Game Reserve and all its animals. I still want to design a Wart Hog, Cheetah, and Buffalo canvas, but I will get to that later. Here are the canvases that were shown at the TNNA Needlepoint Show at the Long Beach Convention Center in my Out of Africa Series.

I had a marvelous time at the the first TNNA Needlepoint show I've ever attended. We at JellyBeanStock were able to finally share our original canvases with Needlepoint Shops around the nation and just locally. It was so much fun, and at the same time very educational. Wake UP Roosters and Slow down Hen

Some Roosters and a busy hen with her family of chicks. In this modern age we always seem to be rushing, doing, getting somewhere, meeting some arbitrary schedule to get something very "important" accomplished. How about we all just STOP...give the little ones a hug, give the tall people hugs and kisses too. Listen and give loving words of encouragement...make staying home and taking care of a little ones needs, wiping a tear, kissing a boo boo, reading a story, fixing a meal, and hugging your husband or wife just as important as the current "must do" topic on your list. Life is very short, and taking time for each other has become a lost art. Lets find it again, and take the time to say "I Love You." in big ways and small, with eye contact, words and deeds. Take good care of yourself and your loved ones, and write when I get work.

I am still painting the beauty of chickens, but I am also enjoying the beauty of heritage goats, sheep, pigs, and cows. It's amazing how many different and wonderful animals have contributed to the lives and the tables of mankind. I have come to appreciate the beauty of icelandic sheep, and as a woman who loves to crochet (my husband calls me blanket woman) I know I would appreciate their wool.

I drew up some line art of sheep, and goats. The first is inspired by the Icelandic Sheep at Mack Hill Farm, and the goats came from my desire to illustrate The 3 Billy Goats Gruff. I love books, and all childrens books and illustrations, old and new. I want to be a childrens book illustrator when I grew up, and now I'm old, never grew up, and just painting and drawing what ever I want because I still can.

3 Billy Goats Gruff- A Cautionary Tale

The old shepherd had died, and that’s what started the problem. His children had no desire to be shepherds, and were to busy playing video games and watching MTV to become farmers, shepherds, or any other such old fashioned nonsense. The goats had always led the sheep and the shepherd up to the pastures in the mountains every spring after lambing. There in the high meadows and the fresh air the kids had grown and thrived, and everyone grew fat and happy making hay while the sun shined. Every winter or late fall to be exact the whole flock descended into the valley, and lived on the farm during the cold winter months. Everyone benefited from this pattern. The farmer had meat for his table, and extra to sell. The farmer’s wife had wool to card, spin, and weave. The extra she could sell to the city folks who loved to knit and crochet with the lovely home spun yarn.

Then the Shepherd died, and life changed. The Three Billy Goats Gruff mourned the loss of the Shepherd, and together with the Great White Pyrenees decided they could lead the sheep up to the mountains. Gathering the flock with the goats in the lead and the dogs on the sides and to the rear they lit out in the early morn. They passed through the new urban sprawl, fancy houses that had sprung up here and there. As they passed home owners got on their cell phones and called their home owners associations to complain of the noise and stink. They objected to the smell of the farm animals, the noise pollution of the baaing and bleating, and the droppings that were fertilizing their well groomed lawns. Little did it matter that the sheep and goats and the farm itself had been there for generations, and they had moved to the great outdoors to get away from the vagaries of city life. Lawyers were called, and the eggs were never gathered because the farmer’s wife had to answer the phone all day and deal with all the complaints.

Now there was a deep ravine separating the lowlands from the mountain pastures, and the shepherd had always lead his flock across the sturdy bridge his grandfather’s father and the farmer’s Great, great grandfather had built and that is how they got to the lush pastures above the farm. This year as the Billy Goats started to trot, trot, trot across the bridge who should block their way, but a large, evil troll. Now this was the Farmer’s bridge, built many generations ago, but it now was on disputed land objected to by the homeowners association, an easement on Government land, or a part of the National Forest. The bridge was roped off, and a stern faced government official, and a smiling, smooth talking lobbyist halted the animals from reaching the greener pastures just beyond the old bridge. The Evil Troll threatened to tear the flock limb from limb, and eat them alive. The three Billy Goats Gruff were highly offended by the evil troll, and told him to please refrain from his bellowing because he was scaring the lambs and the kids. The Ewes were crying and bleating because all they wanted was to get to the pasture for the fresh green grass so they would have enough milk for their babies.

The Homeowners association joined the impromptu town meeting at the bridge with their lawyers, the Ogre, the Government Officials, the Lobbyists, the Special Interest Groups, The Environmentalists, and a Pork Barrel Group wanting to build a new fancy Stainless Steel Bridge over the Ravine. An Amherst Pheasant (an introduced species) entreated everyone to borrow money from China at high interest rates to pay for the new bridge, road crews, surveyors and special interest groups started mapping the new route the sheep and goats now must take. The Debt would be paid for by the Farmer’s children’s children, the Goat kid’s kids, and the poor innocent lambs. Banks got involved lending money at exorbitant rates to the county so they could pay for the environmental impact studies, and the bonuses and retirement packages approved by the district supervisors. The dogs kept their family of hungry, tired, and overtaxed sheep together, and protected the flock from those who prey upon the innocent and the weaker members of any herd. The wild life in the area made themselves scarce as the ARA told it’s members to support the new bridge and get behind the government spending because they would then have access to hunting the local Big Horn Sheep, Elk, Deer, and other wildlife living happily on the mountain above the farm after paying every increasing hunting and licensing fees. The Farmer’s wife berated her husband for not getting her enough help around the farm and a new shepherd, and the Farmer complained about the Government giving visas to Arab Terrorist and everyone else under the sun, but making it impossible for our neighbors south of the border to come and work on the farms, planting, tending the animals, and harvesting the crops. The sun set that day on a world in a very provoked state.

The next morning after having eaten just about all of the grass by the bridge, the sheep started grazing on manicured lawns and petunia beds planted around the new palatial estates on what used to be grazing land. The homeowners went hungry because there were no farm fresh eggs for breakfast, and the Ogre was still occupying the Bridge.

New plans had been drawn up for the Stainless steel Bridge, and another bridge was proposed made out of Fiberglass. A suspension bridge was an alternative put forth by the bridge builders association, and another bridge was proposed made from completely recycled materials. Lego land got involved and offered to build a Lego Bridge for free as long as they could have 500 Acres of the National Forest Land to build a Lego Land for future generations of culturally deprived children in the area. Disney World then made a counter proposal for less land, but a multi use Amusement Park for the diversion of the families in the area and around the world. Plus they would put Twinkly lights on their bridge, and they would hire some of the sheep, chickens, and goats to live as shining examples of rural farm life.

Every one kept debating the pros and cons of all the plans, the government officials kept demanding more money in taxes from the farmer, the homeowners, and threatened loss of basic services due to high demand, lower revenues and rising costs.

The sheep and goats, were hungry, there was no more grass on their side of the mountain. The Ogre had picked off a couple of lambs in the middle of the night, and the Shepherd was sorely missed. The ewes were bleating, the lambs were crying because their mothers had less milk because of all the stress. The dogs were being fed by the humane society, but didn’t like all this strange foot traffic near their flock.

The 3 Billy Goats Gruff decided to take matters in their own horns, and together with other Rams, Elk, wolves, a Puma, and a Bull Moose kicked, butted, pummeled, bit, and clawed, and pushed the Lawyers, Homeowners Association, Lobbyists, Special Interest Groups, Mass Transit Association, Army Corp of Engineers, and Government Officials into the Ravine. The Farmers wife brought in a new shepherd from South of the border who was documented, had a green card, a resident alien card, a work visa, loved farm animals, enjoyed planting crops, and whose wife would help gather eggs, card wool, and pick and can crops. He spoke Spanish and a little bit of English, had 3 children born in the USA, paid his taxes and he and his wife were working hard to put them all through college.

Speaking softly to the dogs and calling to the sheep he and the Billy Goats Gruff led the flock trot, trot, trot over the old wooden bridge to the lush green pastures in the mountains above the peaceful farm below. Life went back to making love in the spring, eating plentiful, nourishing grass in the summer, and trot, trot, trotting back over the bridge in the late fall so that in the winter months everyone could be warm and cozy on the farm. Life was good!

Domestic Icelandic Sheep and Goats

Yesterday I drew this Icelandic Ram, and after researching and drawing Sheep I have come to realize each animal can become extinct from benign neglect. These animals are what is called heritage breeds, and there are not very many of them left. Small farms now breed and raise them for their wool, tender meat, and the natural color diversity of their coats. There is so much hard work done every single day by farmers to not only provide the rest of the world with food, but to contribute wool for carding, spinning, weaving and dyeing. The help and cooperation I see in farm communities, and the joyful comraderie I read on their blogs is not only interesting and informative, but spiritually uplifting. Thank you God for all the farms big and small, and for all the animals they feed, cultivate, care for and protect. Praises to these hard working people and the beautiful animals they preserve. Stand by Your Man

Some women prefer to flit about, party, and change partners, but some women prefer to stand by their man. It's wonderful when you are a team, know your jobs, and treat each other with loving respect. This rooster is Egil again from Mack Hill Farms http://www.facebook.com/lisanh?ref=mf and his favorite hen who rarely leaves his side except to tend to woman's work. I am amazed at how many normal, hardworking couples there are in this world who tend to the business of living and caring for their portion of the world. I look at all the snow that falls on the farms back east and north of us. I think of all the animals that need to be tended and fed in fair weather or foul. This work is constant and has its own rythym during the year, but it takes a husband and wife team, a family, and mutual respect to do all the work that has to be done. Life is so much better when everyone does their part, works for the benifit of the whole, but the individual loves and needs of each individual are respected. I am still painting more chickens, and have about 3 paintings in the works. I worked until midnight last night so I will probably also take a nap today. There is also laundry to be folded and hung, and more to be washed. However, I appreciate my own quiet rythym of life and hope it lasts a long time. Write if I get more work, and I will continue to do the work of painting the animals, plants, and people in this world for you to enjoy. Rooster and Daffodils

Rooster are such a colorful addition to the garden, but a noisy addition to a household. If you have chickens you also attract predators like Coyotes which sets off our German Shepherd highly territorial dogs. Chickens also enjoy vegetable leavings and left over rice the dogs usually eat. There are never any leftovers wasted when you have chickens, dogs, and cats. It's a little noisy sometimes, but even with no farm animals you would still here the breeding red tailed Hawks calling every morning, the Coyotes howling every night, and all the other sounds of life in the country. Such is life, and I guess I wouldn't have it any other way. Write if I get work, and everyone in fair weather or fowl have a good day.

Roosters and Peacocks

The very Handsome Egil roams Mack Hill Farms with his harem, but his number 1 hen is always by his side. The peacock is one owned by the San Diego Zoo, and photographed by me. I then did this drawing in Prismacolor Pencils on Strathmore Black Paper. It has a smooth finish, and helps make the colors of the peacock vibrate with contrast and pencil texture. The portrait of Egil and his favorite hen is done in transparent watercolor on Strathmore Coldpress Watercolor paper. I use very inexpensive brushes called Simply Simmons that are really wonderful, hold their shape, and actually with simple care last quite a long time. Each brush no matter what the size costs $2.99 and sometimes are even less. You get an excellant brush for the price. The Prismacolor Pencils are just fun, diverse in their colors, and contain rich color and pigments. I will now go back to finishing the other Peacock drawing I started last night. I draw daily, paint, and complete each day everyday. I've never had the luxary of so much time on my hands for my private art work, so I am enjoying this time of my life. I may not be as strong as I was when younger, but I sure acquired some fun skills over my lifetime of art work. Keikor the Magnificent is a very handsome rooster and second in command at Mack Hill Farms. The head honcho and ruler of all he surveys is Egil who greets the dawn every day with a cock a doodle doo, which is then followed by Keikor who has grown into his voice and competes with Egil for the many lovely ladies on the farm. It's a case of dueling Roosters, but Keikor knows his place and always gives way to Egil. Mack Hill Farms is extensively photographed by Lisa Richards, and her wonderful photos can be seen on Flicker. She raises and sells the wool of her Icelandic Sheep, and just reading the chronicle of daily life on Mack Hill Farms is facinating. She has given me permission to paint her Kritters so expect to see more paintings of Icelandic Sheep, above is a drawing of an Icelandic Goat, and a Big horned sheep. You can draw your own comparrisons about the different qualities of these noble creatures. Many of our farm animals are also on the endangered species list, because these heritage farm animals are only being bred and raised by a few farmers interested in their conservation and preservation. Rooster Chickens and Frogs Oh my!

Yes, I love little frogs too. I love every creature God created except perhaps flies and mosquitos, but because ducks, frogs, and chickens enjoy eating these pesky little critters I accept the neccessity of them being in this world. Each creature fills a very needed niche in the worlds natural order of things, and each one is facinating in its' own right. I have been speaking with a lovely lady farmer and photographer, and she has Icelandic Chickens (a breed I had never heard of) and Icelandic Sheep that are very good for milk, cheese, meat, and their wool is fabulous for spinning and knitting or crocheting. I like to crochet, but knitting involves too much counting for me so I don't do it. No she has photographed her world extensively, and given me permission to paint her lovely and very handsome Icelandic chickens so be prepared for more chickens on this blog. The name of the farm is "Mack Hill Farm" in NH and the lovely woman is Lisa Richards. She has some beautiful Roosters, and beautiful yarns for sale in her virtual store. I will post more info once I get some of her chickens painted. I've drawn up about 6 already, and because her roosters are so handsome I am sure I will draw up more.

Chickens Roosters and Hens

More Chickens in all their great variety, large, colorful, bold and beautiful. Chickens have such color and size diversity from the little bantams that are no taller than a coke can to the tall heavy and plump Rhode Island Reds, Brahmas, and Buckeyes. Enjoy the chickens in all their diversity and splendor. These were painted this weekend, and I've also been working on some drawings of the wizard Marion Skydancer, but in a new role. That is the beauty of drawing, and painting you can change direction and change your mind at a moments notice. Write if I get work, and keep on drawing and painting. One Painting at a Time

I'm taking everyday one at a time, and each drawing or painting one at a time. There is no grand plan, just blank paper or canvas and something I see that cries out to be turned into some form of art.

I'm drawing the illustrations for a book, but I haven't found a particular direction so I may do the drawings on toned paper with pencil and white charcoal, and then see where I want to go from there. It's getting cold, it's going to rain, and sometimes the energy to be full of enthusiasm just isn't there.

Our Aaron Brothers at the corner is going to close down, for there are not enough customers to sustain the store. This is very disconcerting because they were a wonderful addition to our rural community. I will miss Greg, and Marlene and all the good products and services they have delivered over the past 10 years. Thank you Aaron Brothers you are a great store even though you only stayed for a while. I will miss you, and the people who worked there. Things change, and they are also closing the Michaels that is close by, so our access to art supplies will have to be from the internet. It's a Sad Day for the artists of East County San Diego. :(

Marion Skydancer the Beauty of the Man

Sometimes in life you draw from your head and heart, and then you put those drawings away because you have too much to do in your busy artistic life. I am 61 years old, and I joined an art group called Deviant Art about 2 years ago. In that time I have written to the stock photographer Marion Skydancer, and drawn pictures of him many times over. These images of a long haired, white bearded man are based on the beautiful photographs taken of Marion Skydancer. Sometimes he takes my breath away, because to me he is regal, kind, generous, and a very active model and photographer. He is both old and ageless. His work is beautiful, and so is the man. Rooster Watercolor Portraits

It's fun to choose a subject, and draw and paint Roosters and chickens in all their diversity. I have never had the time to just devote myself to the same subject, and then paint to my hearts content. I know I will soon move on to some other animal, flower, or bird, but for now I will enjoy the beauty and comedy of chickens, increase my knowledge, increase my skills, and use my time wisely.

I have some books I've written for children that need to be illustrated, some large very involved paintings in the studio that need to be completed but they will have to wait. It's winter, spring is some time away, and about 10" of rain is forecast to fall this week. I think I will stick with the small simple pleasures of life, a hot cup of coffee, warm cocoa, or soothing hot tea, small paintings, intimate watercolors and a cozy fire to keep me warm. Sometimes small simple pleasures are much more satisfying then big, bold and exciting. Sometimes a hug, and a shoulder to rest your head on is satisfying enough. I think I will continue to explore the colorful world of chickens. Have a good day, don't worry about work, and enjoy a soothing cup of tea with me. Rooster Portraits Watercolor

Rooster are obviously fascinating me in all their variety and splendor, but I have been painting chickens for years now. I love painting birds, but I love the attitude of chickens and Roosters in particular. I know many people enjoy raising chickens, and some of those chickens become family members and pets. Plus they provide lots of free entertainment for all.

I put up to older Alkyd and Oil Painting I did a while ago to show the different look that can be achieved with a different medium. It's the same subject matter, but a different technique. I could paint with oils impressionisticly , and you would have another way of painting chickens. It's important to get the anatomy correct, but the method of execution determines the final look of the image. I have drawn and painted Roosters and chickens on the computer in Adobe Illustrator, and carved linoleum block to make a simple graphic print. I have sculpted chickens in clay and carved them in foam. Once spring is here and the weather warms up I will go to the corner feed store, and buy some more chickens for their eggs, modeling ability, and the joy they bring to my yard and garden.

Painting Pleasures

There is a great deal of pleasure I get from drawing my wizard or painting the bright, colorful patterns of Mandrin Ducks or Wood Ducks. I love to paint the patterns of chickens, and the stripes of Tigers. There is pattern and beauty all around us, and even the pattern of leaves fallen to the ground, or dried stalks of mowed grain covered with a blanket of snow are inspiration for an artist. Today I give thanks for all the beauty in just a square foot of earth, sky, water, or the heavens. Add music and you have magic of light and color accompanied by sound to make your painting experience even better. Today I have cut up some smooth watercolor paper to paint some chicken portraits on, and to experience how the texture of paper of lack there of effects an illustration or painting.

I'm still unemployed and looking for work in all the wrong places. Write if you have work, and enjoy every day as though it were your last, for we just never know.

Silver Laced Polish Chicken

A Silver Laced Polish Chicken is a beautiful, elegant creature, that brightens the Barn Yard and at the same time is rather comical in his aspect. Some chickens just don't belong in a dirty environment, and make lovely pets. I had a wonderful little silky hen that loved to sleep on the back porch step by my back door, and loved to hop in my lap and be petted. Silver Laced Polish can be this way too, and don't belong with the common riff raff of the Chicken Coop. Chickens and all their diversity make life just a little easier, and are such good providers of eggs. What is not to like?

I started drawing up some Wood Ducks last night so maybe this blog will be filled with something besides chickens this year. That said, I still have other chickens drawn up so I'm sure anything else I draw and paint will be interspersed with chickens.

I also need to keep finishing up drawings and paintings I started eons ago. I have no paying work so all the things I started and was unable to complete because paying jobs came in are now in the "Must Complete" production line. This is a mythical list I have, but the work is real and at age 61 I am too old to get out of my work harness and sit around doing nothing, or worse become a housewife. I am a Racehorse harnessed to a plow. AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH I never wanted to be a housewife when I grew up. A Noble profession, but one I never aspired to. Plus I am a very bad housekeeper, so thank God I have never grown up!!! I think I will continue to drink my morning coffee, and get to painting. Write when you or I get work. Roosters Barnyard Dandy

Roosters are wonderful, decorative, and noisy, but you can't help but appreciate these strutting dandies who are always looking for a receptive lady. They show off, throw their weight around, and are willing to fight for their lady loves like Knights of old. However, they are fickle, rarely are faithful, and are always looking for a new cute, young thing. That said we wouldn't have our over easy breakfast, or deviled eggs, potato salad, or Kentucky fried chicken without the beautiful and useful chicken. Plus they are quite enjoyable as subjects to draw and paint. So today I praise the chicken, for soon I will move on to new subjects and different mediums.

Chickens Roosters Pen and Ink

I'm still drawing these pesky chickens and Roosters, but today I'm puting up some pen and inks I did last night. My dear friend Barb said I should do some pen and ink, mix it up, and add ink to the watercolor. Since she was my first art boss, old (82), and likes to see results I drew some pen and inks. These are for Barb, and for all those people who enjoy pen and ink. I don't know what I will do today, probably laundry, and some form of art work once I get dressed and ready for my day. Chickens and Roosters

Does anyone else feel as though they are creating in a void? I do a painting a day, and sometimes two. I draw, paint, cook meals, listen to people speaking on TV or listen to music or the quiet. I enjoy the silence, and create works of art. When they are finished I mat them, sometimes frame them, and move on to the next work of art. I don't just paint chickens for I love all creatures great and small, and I have a deep love for lizards and frogs. Then of course there is every bird ever created, and all the animals. The diversity of animal and plant life is amazing, and a challenge to understand, draw, and portray. I guess I will be very busy for the rest of my life. I doubt if I ever will run out of chickens or other creatures to draw and paint. I have more chickens drawn up, but I may draw up some beautiful Basilick Lizards and I am also in the mood to paint some landscapes I guess I better get on with my day, and go out and buy the dog and cat food. Life isn't only about the paintings to be done. It is also about the household guardians next meal. A woman's work is never done, and someone write when I get work. I have too much art and time on my hands. Believe it or not I get more done when I am extremely busy.

An Abundance of Chickens

Today I am offering another painting of a chicken. A Rosecomb Rooster among the Anemones. Before my knees decided they no longer wanted to bend, or be good shock absorbers I planted bulbs every winter so my spring days would be filled with flowers. Anemones are a beautiful spring flower grown from corms. Corms look like bumpy little, hard, wood pieces of nothing in particular that magicly transform into these beautiful flowers. If you have never planted them, buy a big bag of 50 corms or more...plant them, and watch them grow. God created flowers for the joy they bring to your eyes, and the peace they bring to your soul. Back Yard Chickens

The first time I saw chickens strolling across a lovely green lawn, and walking among the rose bushes and spring flowers was at Mrs. Virginia Masero's home on an Easter Sunday. It was lovely, and has influenced how I see chickens ever since. They may belong in a Chicken Coop or a barnyard, but they are equally at home during a lovely garden party filled with wonderful memories. Mrs. Masero has left this earth, but her love of flowers, roses, and chickens will never leave my heart or memories. She was a lovely woman who loved her home, her husband, family, and garden, and she passed on those loves to all who knew her. May she rest in peace, and the beauty of roses always bless her memory.

The wonderful diversity of birds, and especially the birds we so loosely group under the name of chickens. It is wonderful to have so many beautiful subjects to draw and paint. I will be painting more chickens today. I am currently working on a Buff Laced Polish. All creatures are beautiful, but you can't beat the size range, color range, feathering, and personalities of the chicken.

Today is January 1, 2010 my husband is cutting up trees that fell over in a storm, and I am Painting Chickens. For some reason I love the beauty of chickens walking in a garden, and all the different variety that makes up the species we call chickens. Today I will post some more of the chickens that have captured my interest, and beautify and delight many people who tend flocks. I will also put up some partridges in Pear trees just for the festive feeling of the Season tomorrow. William and the Wizard

William the Crow is a member of the Wizard's family, but I should let you know in his younger years he did get into a great deal of trouble. This next series of drawings is what happened to William after he wouldn't stop harassing the fairies and chasing them in a quite unsportmanlike manner. The Wizard warned him to leave the Fairies alone, but William chose to ignore the Wizard's sage advice. William, women no matter how small, can pack quite a wallop when you get them mad enough!

Now it does not take a crystal ball to tell the Wizard that the little Fairy has a legitimate complaint against William. William of course blaims it on another bird that looks similar to him, but of course not as handsome. The Wizard is tired of being a referee, and the fairies are a wee bit weary of Williams shennanigans.

William soon forgets how much trouble he is already in, and once again dive bombs the little fairies and wreaks havoc with their wings and their lovely summer frocks. When his misdeeds are once again brought to the attention of the Wizard, William swears that he is a friend to all Fairies, and he would never cause them grief. William can't help but chuckle to himself about how good he is about getting out of trouble with his clever words and innocent expression. Oh William...you're not fooling anyone but yourself.

The Wizard and William

The Wizard is based on Marion Skydancer, a photographer and a wonderful white hair and beard model. William the crow is out of my imagination, friend, pet and troublemaker. William has taken on a life of his own, and is always thinking up naughty things to do, such as pester the local fairies and take a nip out of their wings. He never will admit he is the culprit, and he really should never make a female angry even if she is only two inches tall. The Wizard and William are trying to save all the animals, creatures, and birds of the earth with the help of other like minded humans.

The Wizard is of course sometimes subject to the normal ills and problems that plague all of mankind, but his good friends here and in the world of magic always join together to help him overcome obstacles in his path.

Computer Crashings and Modern Inconviences

I had my first major crash in my computer since owning this bad boy in 2003, and I learned alot about service and trouble shooting my computer from this hellacious experience. I also was aided my a lovely woman named Caroline from the Phillipines, and I am very grateful for her expertise and help in this matter. She is with Dell, the maker of my computer, and I can't thank her enough for getting me up and running again plus installing all my programs for creating new artwork.

I have worked on a drawing or painting a day for the past year and a half, and have been uploading them to http.//houseofchabrier.deviantart.com/ My house is more crowded with art work than ever, and it doesn't look like it will slow down soon.

At Deviant Art I have met some very wonderful people, and have laughed more in the last year than probably in my entire life time. The Deviant Art site is wonderful because you have a world wide audience, plus get instant feedback on what you submit. And I do mean within seconds of submitting a piece of art work you can have five faves and a number of comments. Plus you get to be exposed to many other artists all over the world, and quickly gain a network of friends with common interests and life views.
